Family medicine can be the frontline of seasonal influenza prevention and management and is expected to play a key role in an influenza pandemic. Education of this key sector of health care providers about the best practices in this rapidly evolving disease is a necessary and invaluable contribution to epidemic mitigation and pandemic preparedness. Prompt and correct diagnosis is part of this process and applies to seasonal epidemic management and pandemic preparedness. Family physicians should be educated to strongly encourage medical staff to receive all recommended immunizations and, as per current CDC recommendations, should also make a strong commitment to having at-risk patients immunized. The role of antivirals in the prophylaxis and treatment of influenza is also a key factor in the continuing education of the family medicine physician.
